Scottish Wildcats Almost Extinct
The Scotsman today reports on the state of the Scottish Wildcat. It's really sad to be living through the demise of that secretive creature. I've only ever seen them in captivity in places like Kincraig Wildlife Park, and they really are a species that should not just quietly die out. The wildcat is our largest predatory mammal on land and to hear that there may be as few as 400 left in the country is disasterous. I do hope someone comes up with a way to built the population again. It would be great if they were to become an official symbol of Scotland, like the bald eagle is to the USA. If this were the case more people might take the plight of the Scottish Wildcat seriously.

the Scottish Wildcat probably doesnt really exist anymore it is has interbred with feral cats for century and there is unlikely to be anything to stop this. However there are lots of hyrids out there that look like wildcats act like wildcats and hunt like wildcats so should we really argue over a few egyptian genes? and foxes, otters and badgers are bigger than wildcats sorry i'm a stickler for accuracy

You're dead right, and I don't know why I wrote that tripe about "largest predatory mammal" - I must have read it somewhere that morning and repeated it verbatim without engaging brain first!
"the Scottish Wildcat probably doesnt really exist anymore" It still does actually - but you're right about interbreeding with feral cats, and it's seriously affecting the purity of the Scottish wildcat.
