Visit Mull and Iona

Another in this weeks series of Island features from The Scotsman, this article on Mull and Iona is excellent for anyone considering visiting these two special islands.

I had a trip to Mull and Iona a couple of years ago and was blown away by how great both places were. We camped at the south end of Calgary Beach on Mull for nothing, sat on the beach and watched the sunset with a bottle of red and nobody else around. The next day we had a picnic on the Iona beach at the Bay at the back of the Ocean, again with only sheep for company. It was a very special trip and one to recommend to anyone.
Downside - midges can be bad in the summer.

Things to do in Islay

Islay is an island I've always wanted to go to. The Scotsman has a good piece today on things to do in Islay.

Bird Flu in Scotland

A few days ago the first case of bird flu was found in Scotland, not in a live bird, but in a dead swan carcase floating in a harbour in fife. What does this bird flu in Scotland mean for tourists?

For now, nothing. Several other dead birds have been found and tested and none have been identified with the same bird flu virus in Scotland. Hopefully this will have been an isolated case.

Unlike when the UK was hit with foot and mouth disease, it appears that this time there are no restrictions placed on the public. There is a restriction on movement of birds in a small area near where the dead bird was found in Fife but no restrictions on people's movements, which is a good thing. Cellardyke is very close to other pretty fishing villages and near to St Andrews.

If anyone is worried about bird flu in Scotland, they should read these bird flu questions and answers from the Scottish Executive.
