Wednesday, October 19, 2005 Scottish Parliament wins RIBA Stirling Architecture Prize - but why?
Suprising news this week that the Scottish Parliament Building won the RIBA Stirling prize for architecture. It was up against some awesome buildings that truly catered to their function, and in my view perhaps one of the other buildings should have won it. This prize though was about architecture, not about symbolism so perhaps fair enough. Architecture-wise there is an awesome amount of design involved in this building. There's no doubt that it is almost surreal in design terms.
For me though the building should have more symbolism to the Scotland. It should have a strong heart, should sit proud and imposing, should not be dominated by neighbouring buildings, should be someplace the nation can put it's trust in. For me this building is none of those. It is the equivalent of a trendy modern bar where you're not quite sure if you are wearing the right clothes to go in. The things is, these trendy modern bars are only that for a few years then they need a complete revamp as people see through the fading decor and aging style. Oh, and I really don't like the giant Scalectrix handles stuck all over the outside walls. Find out about visiting the Scottish Parliament here. |
