Bridge rumblings

Had a very good day yesterday visiting Dollar & Dollar Glen. The walk up to Castle Campbell through the river gorge has got to be one of the better short walks around central Scotland. Dollar is a lovely town and I wouldn't say no if I was offered a house there.

After Dollar we went on to the Powmill Milk Bar for a coffee and a slice of carrot cake. You really can't go wrong at this place. Good prices, and a fantastic selection of cakes.

The bridge rumblings I mentioned at the start of this piece happened just after leaving Powmill. Rumbling Bridge is a beautiful old bridge, but like many old bridges it is single-track. So the council roads department has set up a priority system whereby north-bound traffic has right of way. It's not difficult to understand, and generally works quite well.

Imagine my surprise then when half-way across the bridge we encounter a VW Polo tearing round the corner, practically on two wheels and heading straight for us at about 50mph. Luckily the old fool driving it managed to stop before hitting us, but he had clearly not even slowed at the give way marks on the road, and certainly had not even looked at the road signs.

This kind of thing happens a lot. Don't be fooled by our shortbread box scenery, a two tonne automobile will make a serious dent in your holiday. Drive safely, and stay alert lest you encounter a kamikaze polo on a single track bridge. And to the driver of the offending VW - please go take a driving test, or perhaps visit your optician.
